In an earlier post I discussed the need for the stakeholders, in particular the ultimate users of the space, to be explicate about what they mean by flexible or collaborative space. This information is paramount if the furniture and the room design is to be fit for purpose.
Today I attended a meeting to discuss the furniture for a suite of seminar rooms.
One of the key stakeholders used the term 'group learning'. After very little discussion those present understood the importance of being explicit in defining these requirements because several 'versions' of group learning were identified. In fairness some already did.
It was encouraging that the group accepted and understood why time needs to be spent explaining exactly what these 'generalist' terms mean.
It is not always easy to get a definitive brief but if you are designing a learning space keep nagging until you get one.

Completely agree with you Nigel, I have a similar senario here where different users of a space have different expectations of how it should work. They can't even agree on furniture design/type to provide adaptable space (I try to avoid the F word) and we are struggling to specity the audio visual aids that will meet everyones requirements, I am puling my hair out, what there is left to pull, over this.....I hope I win the Lotto this week and can just retire...

I've followed your blog from the beginning I think Nigel and exellent it has been, I tried to contribute where I can. I have to say that I am very disappointed in the lack of response/input from the other people following the blog. There were 32 at last count but very few have bothered to chirp up, come on people, no need to be shy, we are all in the same boat.....right I'm off for a cognac ;-) ....
